Start Museum Preparatory Team will present the tenth exhibition of Genealogy Study of Artists Zhang Ruyi: Modern Fossil at SSSSTART on 2022 January 15th.
As a young artist living and working in Shanghai, Zhang Ruyi’s artistic practice unfolds around everyday logic and she has “taken over” several sites in this city. She is skillful at using conflicting materials in her works to pile up a scene full of metaphors, and controls it’s expression of emotion with calm, restrained visual language as well as artful spatial segmentation. Her art practice delivered the strict order of modern city as well as the energy surging beneath, exposing the artist’s perception and buildup of the mutual establishing and compressing relationship between individual and the society.
In this exhibition, Zhang Ruyi conceived a complete project based on the spatial layout of the Start Museum preparatory team SSSSTART into her creation. With the theme of “Modern Fossil”, Zhang will present her latest sculptures, installations and mix-midia graphic works. These works cover the artist’s diverse creative paths in recent years, and more comprehensively present her artistic thinking in the present time.
Zhang Ruyi (b.1985) currently lives and works in Shanghai. Zhang received BFA Degree in Printmaking, Fine Art College of Shanghai University in 2007, and received MFA Degree in Synthesized Materials, Fine Art College of Shanghai University in 2012.
Zhang Ruyi finds inspiration in everyday materials. In her main narrative approach, she begins with inner intuition and explores the hierarchical interactions between individuals, material, and place.
Her work mainly involves installation, sculpture, and integrated media.
Zhang’s work has been shown at the K11 Art Foundation (Hong Kong, 2019), Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai, 2018), the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, 2017), Cass Sculpture Foundation (Chichester, 2016), the Sifang Museum of Contemporary Art (Nanjing, 2016), Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai, 2015) and other institutions. Her solo exhibitions include ”Conciousness of Location” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2019), “Bonsai” (François Ghebaly Gallery, Los Angeles, 2019), “Building Opposite Building” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2016), “Pause” (White Space, Beijing, 2016), “Cut | Off, ” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2014),and “A Line” (J: Gallery, Shanghai, 2014).
